Snow Plowing Tips - Snow Removal Advice and Time Saving Techniques

Whether you are a homeowner or a snow removal contractor with multiple residential accounts, the same basic rules apply. Plan snow removal in advance, and you'll avoid problems when the snow flies. Time is money and whether you are doing it for yourself or you intend to make money, you want to make the most of the time spent. That is why we want to provide you with some helpful snow plowing tips that will hopefully make the removal of that pesky white stuff a little easier.

General Snow Plowing Tips

• Before operating or servicing your Snowplow, you should become thoroughly familiar with the owner's manual.
• When transporting a snowplow, angle the blade to the right (toward the curb). This will reduce the chance of catching a curb or a snowbank that could pull your vehicle into it.
• When transporting a plow, position the blade so as not to block the headlights or your vision.
• Never pile snow on someone else's property.
• Never pile snow by mailboxes, dumpsters, water drains, catch basins, electrical boxes or fire hydrants.

Plowing Driveways

• Make sure you know where your customer wants you to pile the snow
• Drive up to the garage; drop the blade; then back up–pulling the snow approximately two car lengths back. Turn the vehicle around and back into the cleaned area. With the blade angled to the center of the driveway, push the snow to the end of the driveway. Finish by pushing the snow into the corners at the end of the driveway. Be careful to not leave snow on the road or on sidewalks.

ATV Plowing Tips

• Always wear a helmet when plowing snow
• If blade is kept in warm storage, set blade outside and allow to cool – this prevents snow from freezing to blade when plowing.
• Plow snow during low-traffic hours, be cautious of pedestrians and vehicles.
• Use lowest transmission gear, on 4WD select low range if equipped.
